Aquis Sestis

Aix-en-Provence

Listen to the story

Aquis Sestis, the waters of Sextius, is Aix-en-Provence, named after the Roman commander Sextius Calvinus, who in 122 BC built a fort here because of its many hot and cold springs. In 102 BC Marius won his famous victory over the Teutons nearby. Under Augustus the town became a Roman colony, later the capital of its province, and on the map it is a crossroads of four routes. The beginning of its name has worn away.
