Indesina/Andesina

bei Büllingen (Miller), neuere Forschung: Grand (Dép. Vosges)

Listen to the story

A fold in the parchment has swallowed the beginning of this name, so the place is called Indesina or Andesina, a name no other source knows. It is most likely Grand in the Vosges, a sanctuary of Apollo Grannus on a remote plateau, whose spring pool drew pilgrims and emperors alike. A speech of 310 claims that Apollo appeared there to Constantine. Grand had baths, a basilica with a mosaic and an amphitheatre for seventeen thousand people. Older research looked to Nancy or Bourbonne-les-Bains instead.
