Tres Tabernas
(near Cisterna) (Miller)
Listen to the story
At Tres Tabernas, on the Via Appia south-east of Cisterna, Christians from Rome came out to meet the apostle Paul on his way to the city, as the Acts of the Apostles tell. The name points to a cluster of three inns where a road from Antium crossed the great highway, and the orator Cicero mentions the place in his letters. The map draws the courtyard building it also uses for spas, but here it stands for lodging, as it does at other inns and official hostels. The place later became a bishop's seat and was joined to Velletri in 592.
