Egdava

östl. Çeşmelisebil

Egdava carries a Phrygian name, which local inscriptions write Gdanmaa; only the map and the geographer Ptolemy add the extra E at the front. It lay in Lycaonia, west of Lake Tatta, at the old settlement mound of Çeşmelisebil, once the richest find spot for Christian inscriptions in Lycaonia, though few ancient stones remain there now. Inscriptions still call it a village after Constantine, yet it already had a bishop at the Council of Nicaea in 325. Later the see was named Eudokias, probably after moving to a safer site. The twenty miles to Pegella are probably a doubled ten, since the real distance is only about fourteen kilometres.
