Road station

Derta

Derta is where the road simply stops: no stretch leads on from it, and its only link runs back to Diotahi, sixty Roman miles away, both drawn on an island in the marshes. The Ravenna list counts a Dertha among the cities of the Persians, next to Diothaze, and older research put it on a road from Sura on the Euphrates down to Babylon, though that list is unreliable here. Its site is unknown; whether a link ran on to Volocesia, perhaps by boat, remains open.
