Thusuros

Tozeur

Thusuros is the oasis of Tozeur in southern Tunisia, set between two salt lakes, the Chott el Djerid and the Chott el Gharsa, on the road from the oasis of Nefta to Thiges. The geographer Ptolemy calls it Tisouros, the Ravenna list Thursurum, and an inscription names the community as the civitas Tusuritana. It became a bishop's seat early on. The Roman town lives on in two quarters of the oasis, Belidet el-Hader and ech-Cheurfa, and only Belidet el-Hader has kept ancient monuments, among them the remains of a Roman temple.
