Gemellas

Mlili (Barrington) · Mlidi (Miller)

Gemellas is Gemellae, a Roman fort and town south-west of Biskra at today's Mlili, part of the Fossatum, the frontier works that guarded Numidia's desert edge. In the 3rd century a detachment of the Third Augustan Legion from Lambaesis was stationed here, and at times a cavalry regiment from Pannonia; in the 4th century the commander of the Gemellae frontier sector had his headquarters here. The thirty-three miles the map gives from Ad Piscinam are really nearer twenty.
