Gemenello

Cimiez

Gemenello is Cemenelum, today Cimiez just north of Nice, the chief place of the Vediantii, a Ligurian people, first named by the Greek historian Diodorus. Under Augustus it became the capital of the province of the Maritime Alps, a self-governing town on the coast road into Gaul, until Diocletian placed it under Embrun instead. Its ruins include baths, aqueducts and an amphitheatre, as well as an early Christian church with a baptistery. Inscriptions honour the Mothers of the Vediantii. The map writes the name with a G.
