Garsi

Elvan Çelebi ?

Garsi is a garbled Karissa, which the geographer Ptolemy lists among the towns of the Trocmi, a Galatian people; the slip already stood in the source the map shares with the Ravenna list, which writes Garse. The station is tentatively placed at Elvan Çelebi, where ancient capitals, reused stones and inscriptions have been seen, among them a milestone of Pomponius Bassus from the early 2nd century AD that was inscribed afresh between 293 and 305. Another candidate is Eskiyapar, with a fortress wall of the 3rd millennium BC and later Phrygian, Galatian and Roman remains.
