Road station

Avibus

ed Debdaba? · el-Hamma? (Tunisia), Africa Proconsularis

Avibus was a road station in the province of Africa Proconsularis, in what is now Tunisia, perhaps at el-Hamma or at ed Debdaba; neither site is certain. Nineteen Roman miles, about twenty-eight kilometres, lead on to the colony of Tacape. Two roads come in from behind: one from Timezegeri Turris, ten miles away, the other from Silesua, eighteen miles off. Oddly, the name is written at the far end of the Silesua stretch, though there seems no need for it. The Ravenna list probably knows the place as Authus.
