Alexandria

Khojend · Herat? (Barrington)

This Alexandria, near the end of the road from Ecbatana, stands right beside an Antiochia, and the two are one and the same city, founded by Alexander the Great and refounded under the Seleucid king Antiochus the First, a second name that Strabo and Pliny also knew. The map apparently drew on two sources, one from Alexander's time and one Seleucid. Which Alexandria it was is disputed. Older research took it for Alexandria in Areia, modern Herat in Afghanistan; later research prefers Alexandria in Margiana, which a second road from Nagae reached.
