Road station

Siacus

Siacus is a river disguised as a town: the map enters it like any station on the road, even with its own distance figure, as it does elsewhere with the river Arsia. It is the Sitacus, which flows into the Persian Gulf, and Alexander's admiral Nearchus found a poor anchorage at its mouth. Pliny claimed one could sail up it to Pasargadae in seven days, which is wrong, since Pasargadae cannot be reached by ship from the sea. It may be the Khor Ziyarat, a shallow coastal stream that boats can use only after heavy rain.
