Gabala

Jebele (Barrington)

Gabala, a harbour town on the Syrian coast, is Jableh, where a Roman theatre and rock-cut tombs survive. It gave its name to a fine storax, the fragrant resin that Pliny and Dioscorides call Gabalites. The map counts eight Roman miles from Palto and eleven on to Laodicea, though the start of that last stretch is not marked.
