Balneis
Baniyas
Balneis is Balanea, now Baniyas on the Syrian coast; the pilgrim from Bordeaux marks it as the boundary between Coele Syria and Phoenicia. It once belonged to the territory of the island city of Aradus, and under Justinian it was moved into the new province of Theodorias. A later name, Leukas, never took hold: Muslim writers and the Franks alike went on calling it Balanias and Valania, and in crusader times the river beside it marked a frontier.
