Road station

unnamed/illegible, no. ID 3766

In Calabria, just after Caprasia, the Apennines and the river Crathis leave the copyist almost no room. He did not like writing across rivers or mountains, and a little earlier, at Interamnium, he had squeezed a figure into the gap between them. Here that would have left no space for the next station, Crater Fluvius, so he stepped the road down once more. Even so, the distance figure, twenty-six, did not quite fit: its V had to be written on the river itself.
