Listen to the story
Upellis, the Roman Upellae, was the last station before Celeia, the Roman Celje, on the road over the Karawanks from Virunum. Older research placed it at Weitenstein, today Vitanje, where a Roman milestone gives a distance of eight miles; a modern atlas prefers Stara Vas near Velenje. Other milestones in the area count six, eleven and twelve miles. The map sets Upellis sixteen Roman miles from Colatio and thirteen, about nineteen kilometres, from Celeia.
