Road station

unnamed/illegible, no. ID 3767

On the road into Vibona Balentia, today Vibo Valentia in Calabria, the map makes a nameless step just before the town's symbol, after Annicia. It was drawn not for a station but for a name: the step gave the copyist room to write out Vibona Balentia in full beside its picture, and spared him a curve in the line. It is one of many such steps in the south of Italy, where hills, rivers and pictures crowd the parchment.
