Road station

unnamed/illegible, no. ID 3763

Between Casilinum and Capua in Campania, only three Roman miles apart, the map inserts a nameless step. Without it the copyist would have had to squeeze the figure three into the narrow gap between the river Volturnus and Capua's picture, or write it on the river itself, as he does elsewhere. The step also saved him a curve: carried straight on, the road would have struck the roof of Capua's building, which he always avoids. So the extra stair brings the road back to the level of the building's foundation.
