Road station

unnamed/illegible, no. ID 3764

On the coast road of Apulia, between Natiolum and Barium, today Bari, the map adds a nameless hook nine Roman miles before Bari. The coastline was in the way, and one larger step would have given room enough for both the name Natiolum and the distance figure. But the copyist seems to have liked his steps all of about the same modest height, so he drew an extra one instead. It is a small glimpse of a draughtsman's habits.
