Lambese

Lambèse (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Lambese is Lambaesis, today Tazoult in Algeria, the great base of the Third Augustan Legion on the northern slope of the Aurès mountains. The camp was completed around 129; the year before, on the first of July, the legion had paraded before Hadrian, as an inscription records. Lambaesis became the military centre of Roman Africa and, under Septimius Severus, capital of the province of Numidia. Many ruins survive, from the headquarters and a triumphal arch to the amphitheatre. Yet the map gives this great place no symbol at all.
