Fines

vielleicht Sury-aux-Bois

On the map this Fines is written at the end of the road coming from Cenabum, today Orléans, instead of beside its own distance figure of twenty-two, though nothing stood in the way of placing it properly. It was a border station east of Orléans in France, perhaps at Sury-aux-Bois. Its name means At the Border: such stations seem to mark where a road crossed an old boundary between two Gallic peoples, later between two Roman districts. Several other places on the map bear the same name.
