Road station

Fines

Ingrandes

On the road from Poitiers to Argenton the map marks a station called Fines, but gives no distance for the stretch beyond it; the Roman register of routes supplies twenty-one. Milestones found around Chauvigny count the distance both from Poitiers and from this very place, one of them set up in 140 for the emperor Antoninus Pius. The name means boundaries: here the land of the Pictones met that of the Bituriges Cubi. The station is placed at Ingrandes, where Roman burials were found and where the old boundary between the dioceses of Poitiers and Bourges ran.
