Blavia

Blaye (Barrington)

Blavia is Blaye, north of Bordeaux, on the road to Saintes and Poitiers. The poet Ausonius calls it military Blavia, a late Roman list of garrisons spells it Blabia, and the historian Gregory of Tours knows it as a small fort. Some older copies misread the name as Blania. The map's figure to Bordeaux, nine, is too short; the Roman register of routes gives nineteen, which is right. On the map, much of the line of the road north to Lamnum is faint.
