Road station

unnamed/illegible, no. ID 3748

Nine Roman miles after Formiae, on the Via Appia in Italy, the road on the map takes a small nameless step just before the town symbol of Minturnae. The step marks no station. The copyist drew it so that the road would not run into the roof of Minturnae's little building but meet it neatly at the level of the eaves, and so that he would not have to draw a curve. It is one of many such steps that show how carefully the roads were fitted around the pictures.
