Road station

unnamed/illegible, no. ID 3700

Between Tuder, today Todi, and Ameria, today Amelia in Umbria, the road on the map makes a small step with no name beside it. It is no lost station: the copyist seems to have bent the line only to find room for the distance figure, six, which would not fit beside Todi's town symbol, hemmed in as it is by the Tiber and the Apennines; even Todi's name had to go above the river. Yet he could easily have run the road straight and tucked the six beneath the waves of the Tiber. Why he chose the step remains a small mystery.
