Road station

unnamed/illegible, no. ID 3699

Here the map marks a station without a name on the road from the Tyrrhenian coast inland to Siena in Tuscany. The distances point to a stop sixteen Roman miles from Siena and thirty-three from Aquae Populoniae, perhaps called Ad Sextum Decimum, at the Sixteenth Milestone, near Papena, where the road crossed the river Feccia and met an older road north to Roselle. Small Etruscan cemeteries of the sixth and fifth centuries BC lie along the road there, and a Roman cemetery has yielded oil lamps, one stamped with the maker's name Anneius.
