Road station

unnamed/illegible, no. ID 2061

Between Cremona and Deloriaco the map shows a small bend in the road with no name at all. It is not a lost station: the copyist simply needed room. Two tributaries of the Po, the Ubartum and the Umatia, hem in the space for the name Cremona, so he bent the road to make room for its last syllable rather than cut through the river. This little detour shows that the rivers were drawn first and the roads and names fitted in afterwards. From the bend the map counts twenty-two Roman miles to Deloriaco.
