Road station

unnamed/illegible, no. ID 3754

Coming down from the Great Saint Bernard, the road on the map takes a small nameless step just before the town symbol of Augusta Praetoria, today Aosta in Italy. It is no lost station: the copyist stepped the line so as not to cut through the river Duria, the Dora Baltea, and to avoid drawing either a curve or a slanting line. The figure of twenty-five Roman miles from Eudracinum is thus written on a stretch that ends at nothing but a bend.
