Laviscone

Les Echelles

Laviscone was a village on the busy road that ran from Vienne through Savoy over the Little Saint Bernard to Aosta and Milan, at Les Échelles on the river Guiers, where inscriptions naming it a vicus have been found. Its name is older than the Romans, usually thought to be Ligurian rather than Celtic. Beyond it the road climbed over the Col de l'Épine, where the Roman roadway is still well preserved. The Roman register of routes writes Labiscone.
