Mountain

Asticus

Istranca Daği

Listen to the story

Asticus is written in red across a mountain symbol drawn in brown outline, in the Strandzha range on the border of Bulgaria and Turkey. The name is otherwise known only for a region, Astice, called after the Thracian people of the Astae, whose kings sat at Bizye. Older research therefore suspected that the mapmaker had mixed up the land, the people and the mountains, but the way the name sits on the range suggests the mountains are meant. A nameless range just above it probably belongs to it too.
