Mons Aetna

Listen to the story

Mount Etna, the great volcano of Sicily, appears on the map only as a mountain symbol without a name. The Greek geographer Strabo already described its three belts: vineyards on the volcanic ash below, a zone of forest above, and a bare summit under snow for most of the year. Remains of a Roman building survive just below the crater, nearly three thousand metres up, and an eruption in 122 BC laid Catania in ruins.
