Alpes Bastarnice

Listen to the story

Alpes Bastarnice, the Alps of the Bastarnae, is the map's name for the Carpathians, taken from one of the warlike peoples who used these wooded mountains as a refuge and a base for raids. Calling them Alps fits an old view: for a long time the Carpathians counted as part of the Alps or of the Balkan range, until the geographer Marinus, known through Ptolemy, recognised them as a range of their own. The western ranges held gold, silver and salt, and from 106 to 248 AD they belonged to the Roman province of Dacia.
