Road station

Ad Nonum

T. d. Ortello [2]

Listen to the story

Ad Nonum means 'at the ninth', named after the ninth milestone on the road leading west from Capua, and the map's own distances fit that milestone exactly. The station probably lay near Ortello in Campania. The Tabula marks it with a small drawing of a farmstead, the sign of a place where travellers could stop and rest, although scholars find its presence here hard to explain. A pilgrim's route from Bordeaux lists a change station called 'at the eighth' on the same stretch. Either a copying error turned one station into two, or two stops stood very close together, and only excavation can settle it.
