Ad Flumen Ganges

j. etwa Furukabad am Ganges (Miller)

Ad flumen Ganges simply means at the river Ganges. Greek sources knew a city named Ganges, royal seat of the Gangaridae and a market for the finest cotton, for nard and for malabathrum from China, but that city lay on an arm of the river near its mouth. The road station, linked to Elymaine, must be another place further upstream, perhaps near Farrukhabad, and enormous stages separate it from its neighbours on the map. The copyist lifted the final s of the name above the line, so that it would not run into the river.
