Vallio

Toul

Vallio is the map's form of Tullum, today Toul, the chief town of the Leuci on the Moselle. The first letter is uncertain: an old photograph suggests a T, but on the parchment it looks more like a V. Toul lay where three roads met, was walled at the end of the third century and had a bishop from the fourth. Next to the name the map draws a large picture of a bath building; older research took it for Toul, but it belongs to the spa of Lindesina, today Bourbonne-les-Bains. The road north bends upwards here to avoid a mountain range.
