Uzintum

Ugento

Listen to the story

Vzintum is Uzentum, now Ugento in the Salento, a town of the Sallentini. After Cannae, the historian Livy reports, the Uzentini went over to Hannibal together with the Greek cities of the coast. The modern town sits on a hill, while the ancient one spread across the plain below, and the town's own coins carry short forms of its name. The list of places compiled in Ravenna garbles it to Mirtum.
