Ugerno
Beaucaire
Ugerno is Beaucaire, on the Rhône opposite Tarascon, where the roads from Arles and from Glanum met on their way to Nîmes. It was one of the twenty-four small towns dependent on Nîmes, and inscriptions and many finds show its importance. Travellers crossed the Rhône here; the silver cups from Vicarello mark the crossing, though a fixed Roman bridge seems unlikely. The historian Gregory of Tours calls it a fort of Arles. In the Middle Ages the castle was called Bellum Quadrum, the fair square, which gave the town its modern name.
