Ulmo Spaneta

Bačinci? [für Spaneta]; Tovarnik [für ‘Ulmo’]

Ulmospaneta runs two stations into one. The pilgrim from Bordeaux lists them separately: first the lodging at Ulmo, at the elm, today Tovarnik in Croatia, then the place to change horses at Spaneta, probably Bačinci in Serbia, a name of Celtic origin. On the map the two names merged, perhaps because the copyist had to fit them around the first letters of the word Inferior, and the figure for the first stage was dropped. The stretch on to Sirmium, oddly, is drawn as two.
