Road station
Ad Publicanos
Lukovica oder Watsch
Listen to the story
Ad Publicanos lay near Lukovica or Vače in Slovenia, on the road from Emona towards Celeia, where travellers crossed from Italy into Noricum and paid customs. Its name means at the tax collectors, the publicani who farmed the Roman customs. On the map this name, and that of the next station, Atrans, were squeezed in after the large red letters of Noricum had been written, running over its R and I; the copyist had apparently overlooked them at first. The map sets Ad Publicanos eleven Roman miles from the river Savus and six from Atrans.
