Ad Pirum Filumeni

am Flusse Cesano, östlich von Mondolfo [4]

Listen to the story

Ad Pirum Filumeni, at the pear tree of Philumenus, has a strikingly personal name: the pear tree marked the inn, and Philumenus, a Greek name, was probably the man who founded it. It stood on the coast road by the river Cesano near Mondolfo, where a road came down from the Apennines; a Roman register of routes gives distances for that side road that cannot possibly be right.
