Ad Pirum

zwischen Rocchetta Sant’Antonio und Candela [Pleiades]

Listen to the story

Ad Pirum, at the pear tree, was a stop on the road linking the Via Appia at Aquilonia with the Via Traiana at Herdoniae, near Candela, at the spot now called Fontana Pirro, three kilometres from the town, whose name may still echo the pear. Like other pear-tree inns on the map, it was probably named after a tree that marked the inn. The map omits the distance to Aquilonia, and the line to it is missing too.
