Provincia Africa

Listen to the story

Provincia Africa is lettered in an unusual way: the word Provincia stands in black and Africa in red, and why remains an open question. The name stretches across nearly half of the map's North African land, from the country around Cirta to that around Leptis Magna. Its limits run from Tucca, marked as the border with Mauretania, to the Altars of the Philaeni on the edge of Cyrenaica. That matches Africa Proconsularis, the province set up under Augustus, governed from Carthage and split up by Diocletian. The name itself probably goes back to the Afri, a Libyan tribe.
