Region
Regio Transpa(dana)
Listen to the story
Regio Transpadana, the region beyond the Po, was the eleventh of the districts into which Augustus divided Italy, bounded in the east by the river Oglio, and the Roman writer Pliny lists it under that number. By the late third century the name covered the whole Po plain below the Alps, and in the fourth it was split into Aemilia and Liguria. On the map the copyist stumbled: the final letter of Regio slid onto the second word, and that word stops short, though there was ample room to finish it.
