Region
Pontus Polemoniacus
Listen to the story
Pontus Polemoniacus was the Pontus of King Polemon, a stretch of the Black Sea coast of Asia Minor once ruled by this client king of Rome. Oddly, the map sets the name out in open water rather than across the land, so that it was once even taken for the eastern part of the Black Sea itself. Yet the region really did reach as far as Trapezus, today's Trabzon, drawn above the water, so a name straddling both shores fits well enough. The lettering has faded: the photographs of 1888 show only parts, while the printed edition of 1598 gives the full name, which the geographer Ptolemy also records.
