Road station
unnamed / illegible, no. 16
Listen to the story
Beyond Ad Dianam, in Numidia in present-day Algeria, the map marks a station whose name is lost, twelve Roman miles on, followed by another, ten miles further. Their figures survive, so places must have stood here, but no other source names them: a Roman register of routes knows Diana, yet not this road through the mountains. The two nameless stretches also show how far the map's design distorts: together they run about twenty-four centimetres across the parchment.
