Cosilianum

Sala Consilina

Listen to the story

Cosilianum is Consilinum, which gave its name to today's Sala Consilina in the Vallo di Diano. The Roman statesman Cassiodorus describes the great fair held nearby at Marcelliana, beside an old spring, to which traders flocked from Campania, Lucania, Apulia and Bruttium. By the fifth century it had its own bishop. On the map two letters of the name are hard to read, and the roads around it are tangled: a line seems to touch Grumentum, though it does not quite.
