Cosa

Cos-sur-l’Aveyron

A medieval charter from the abbey of Moissac speaks of a castle called Chos in the district of Cahors, and this has helped to fix Cosa at Cos, on the Aveyron, on the road from Cahors to Toulouse. Most scholars accept this; a few preferred Caussade. The name has been compared with that of the Cocosates, a people of Aquitania, and it is shared with a far better known Cosa on the coast of Etruria, a Roman colony. This Cosa, by contrast, is known only from the map.
