Ad Aquas

Călan · Kalan

Listen to the story

An altar found at Călan in Romania was set up by the prefect of the 'district of the waters', the village around Ad Aquas, a station on the road from Sarmizegetusa to Apulum in Trajan's province of Dacia. The name means 'at the waters', and warm baths are still used there, beside remains of Roman bathhouses. The map counts fourteen miles to Sarmizegetusa, but the figure seems to have been twenty-four.
