River
Fluvius Odubria
Staffora
Listen to the story
In AD 461 the emperor Majorian was killed near Dertona beside the Fluvius Odubria, the river now called the Staffora in northern Italy. Ancient writers knew it as the Ira, and the Roman town of Iria, modern Voghera, took its name from the river, as towns so often did. The Tabula shows only the river here, not the town, and gives it a different name altogether. A bridge of the Via Postumia once carried the road across it, and on the map the river flows into the Po.
