River
Fluvius Orsus
Orco
Listen to the story
Local people call the Fluvius Orsus "golden water", because its sands carry gold; it is the Orco in Piedmont, a modest tributary of the Po, some seventy-five kilometres long, which the Roman writer Pliny knew as the Orgus. The map gets its course badly wrong. It has the river rise beside the Little Saint Bernard pass and join the Po beyond both Turin and Aosta. Why so small a stream was drawn at all may lie in the name written astride it near its source, the Tauriani, for the river marked a boundary of the Celtic Taurini.
